Brussels
Brussels is the capital of Belgium as well as the administrative centre of the European Union, therefore often called also the capital of Europe. The city is also the headquarters of the French and Flemish Communities. Today the name Brussels stands for an agglomeration of 19 communes forming one of the three Regions of the federal Belgian state – Brussels-Capital Region.
Brussels has been given its character by the coexistence of French and Flemish culture. Also linguistically it is bilingual enclave (Dutch, speaking in the northern part and French, speaking in the southern part); although most of the people speak French. English is very common, too.
The municipality has a population of about 140,000 while the Brussels-Capital Region has 1,006,749 inhabitants. The Metropolitan area has about 1,975,000 inhabitants.
As mentioned above, Brussels is the headquarters of many international organizations. Two of three European Union institutions seat here – European Commission and Council of the European Union. Also European Parliament has its chamber here and some plenary sessions are held here. Brussels is also the political seat of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), the Western European Union (WEU) and EUROCONTROL, (the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation).
This is the reason why is Brussels home to nationalities from the entire world, that give a cosmopolitan flavour to its atmosphere. It is the city of picturesque medieval streets, lively squares, beautiful boulevards, impressive monuments, spacious parks, cozy cafés, interesting restaurants and an active cultural life (There are about 80 museums there, covering such areas as art, technology, industry, science, folklore, literature, history and many other subjects.)
Similar variety is visible also in different architectural styles. Gothic cathedrals and churches are next to gracious classical facades, or beautiful art nouveau and art deco houses. The heart of Brussels and the place to start getting to know the city is the Grand Place (Grote Markt). Every year in August there is a special flower exhibition – flower carpet on the square. On the other hand, economic part of the city is full of modern, glass buildings. A never-to-be-forgotten construction is also the Atomium, standing further from the historical and economic centre.
Although Brussels is more than 1000 years old, it is a modern city, worthy to be seen. It is visited by many tourists from the entire world every year.
