Prague
Prague is the Capital city of the Czech Republic. It has been the most valuable urban conservation area since 1922, when the historical core of the city was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register. Prague has had the reputation of one of the most beautiful cities in the world since the Middle Ages. It has been given many attributes, such as: “golden”, "city of hundred spires" (there are approximately 500 towers in the city), "the crown of the world", "a stone dream".
Throughout the history, Prague has attracted many famous people, for example W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, F. M. Dostoyevsky, A. Rodin, G. Apollinaire, P. I. Tchaikovsky, O. Kokoschka as well as the British Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II. Writers and poets, such as Jan Neruda, Jaroslav Hasek, Jaroslav Seifert, Franz Kafka, Max Brod and Egon Erwin Kisch featured their home town in their works.
Prague lies on both banks of Vltava River. Historical core of the city is made by 6 parts that were independent cities, unified just in the 18th century. They are: Staré Město (The Old Town), Josefov (the part of previous Jewish Town – today the part of the Old Town), Nové Město (the New Town), Malá Strana (the Small Side), Hradčany and Vyšehrad. There is the highest concentration of historical sights, museums and art-galleries in these parts. The historical core has the area of 866 ha.
Prague lies in the area of 496 square kilometers at an altitude 235 metres above sea level. Administratively, the city is divided into 22 autonomous parts and 57 municipal parts. There are 1 200 000 inhabitants in Prague, most of them live in suburban parts, only 40 000 live in the historical centre. The population density is 2365 inhabitants per square kilometre.
Besides being the cultural centre of the country, with National Theatre, Museum, Gallery, Opera and Library situated there, Prague is also the most important economic centre in the Czech Republic, at least as far as tourism or film industry is concerned. Recently it caught attention of Hollywood film makers, but there are still many Czech films shot there. It is also the centre of higher education. The most famous Czech University, Charles University was founded in 1348. There are other six Universities reside in Prague (Czech Technical University, Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Institute of Chemical Technology, Academy of Performing Arts, Czech University of Architecture and University of Economics).
