Paris
Paris is the capital city of France, as well as the largest city in the country, being its cultural, business and political centre. Its role in world fashion, gastronomy and the arts is undoubting. With its nickname “the City of Lights” it is considered to be one of the most romantic cities in the world. Paris is most visited city in the world with more than 30 million visitors per year.
Paris is situated in the north centre of the country on the banks of the Seine River that divides Paris into two islands, the Île Saint-Louis and the Île de la Cité – the heart and origin of the city. It covers the area of 105 square kilometers. It has several hills, the most famous and the highest one is Montmartre, approximately 130 metres above sea level. The urban area of Paris is 2,723 square kilometres large. The city is divided into several districts, here are some of them: Champs-Élysées, Avenue Montaigne, Place Vendome, Faubourg Saint-Honoré, L'Opéra, Montmartre, Les Halles, Le Marais, Place de la Bastille, Quartier Latin, Montparnasse or Paris suburban district La Défense.
Although the Paris history is long and interesting, to the most famous events belongs the French Revolution in 1789. The greatest development of the city was in the 19th century and it is connected mostly with changing of its look. The city underwent a massive renovation under Napoleon III and his préfet Haussmann. The most significant monument of Paris – the Eiffel Tower was also built in this century, in 1889, as a “temporary” display of architectural engineering. The first line of Parisian metro was opened in the very beginning of the 20th century, in 1900.
There are more than 2 million inhabitants in the City of Paris. The demographic tendency for this region is declining. It is on the second place in density in the Western world after Manhattan NY, with density around 24 500 inhabitants per square kilometer. The whole urban area of the city is reaching 10 million inhabitants. Around 20 % of Parisians were born outside France. Paris is the most multi-cultural part of Europe.
The reason why Paris is so famous with tourists is mainly its historical monuments and beautiful places, many museums, as well as night life and the overall atmosphere of the city. To the most famous monuments belongs abovementioned Eiffel Tower, then the Arc de Triomphe at one end of Champs-Elysees leading to the Tuileries gardens and Louvre museum. One cannot miss the Notre-Dame cathedral, the Invalides museum or Pantheon. Not so old, but in spite of that one of the most visited tourist attraction is Parisian Disneyland.
Although the quite large area of the city, it is easy to move between the famous places, either in sightseeing buses or by wide net of metro and RER.
One can never get tired of Paris.
