Lewis's Department Store
pictures, photos, facts and information on Lewis's Department Store (Liverpool)

The picture depicts entrance to the old John Lewis department store on Ranelagh Street (a new John Lewis department store was opened recently in Liverpool. It stands on Basnett Street). The building was designed by the Vines' architect, Walter Thomas, after he had married into the Lewis family. Above the main entrance to Lewis's department store, there is a bronze statue created by Sir Jacob Epstein called Liverpool Resurgent. It is a male nude standing in the prow of a ship. It is known locally as Dickie Lewis. The statue was unveiled in 1956, the centenary year of the store's opening. The statue is a well known meeting place. It is also mentioned in the song In My Liverpool Home by Peter McGovern, a member of the Liverpool group The Scaffold.
