Golf courses ( 640x480 )
There are several things St. Andrwes is famous for and golf is one of them. Golf was developed here and it has been played for over six centuries. Until the late 19th century there was only one course. However, as St. Andrews was becoming more and more popular by golfers, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews decided to build a second course in 1895. This became known as the New, whereas the previous was named the Old. Two years later the Jubilee was built and the face of the Links changed forever.

Nowadays it is the largest golf complex in Europe with seven golf courses (five 18-hole courses, a nine hole course alongside it and the seventh course, The Castle Course, on a site to the south east of St Andrews), three clubhouses, four golf shops and Golf Practice Centre and Golf Academy managed by St Andrews Links Trust. Golf is played on all levels by people of all ages. All golfers must accept the dress code (smart casual clothing). Golfers are, as well, asked to wear plastic cleats or 'soft spikes' which do less damage to the greens.
