Monterrey is a Mexican city lying in the northeastern part of the country. It is the capital city of Mexican state Nuevo León. It is also known as “City of the Mountains” – the average altitude is 537 metres above sea level. Actually, it lies at the foothill of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, and east of the city there is the iconic most recognized symbol of Monterrey the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain). Another nickname is “Sultan of the North” (Sultana del Norte).

It was founded on 20 September in 1596 in the area of previous Kingdom of León. The third expedition to these places was the expedition of twelve families led by Diego de Montemayor and they founded the city, firstly called Metropolitan City of Our Lady of Monterrey (Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey).

Monterrey is the third most populous city in Mexico. The population of the city proper was 1,138,335 in 2006 and the total number of people living in the metropolitean area is 3,612,991 inhabitants. The density is 1,989 inhabitants per square kilometre. Monterrey's inhabitants are called “regiomontanos” or “regios”.

The city is modern industrial and business centre. It has prominent positions in sectors such as steel, cement, glass, auto parts, and beer. Monterrey is considered one of the best cities for business in the world.

The metropolitan area of the city is the second most important in Mexico in the field of finances and manufacture. It is well connected with the USA border, the sea and inland Mexico through several modern roads, including the Carretera Nacional (also known as the Panamerican Highway).

Monterrey is as well the most secure city in Latin America and one of the top cities in terms of Quality of Life (which besides safety includes, income levels, purchasing power, education opportunities and health services). As far as education is concerned it is headquarters of one of the most prestigious private universities in Latin America, the “Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey”, or ITESM (Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Studies).
