Boston, Ma
Boston is the city in the US state the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is its capital. It has several nicknames, for example “City on the Hill“, “Beantown“, “The Hub of the Universe“, “Athens of America“ or “The Cradle of Revolution“. It is one of the oldest, wealthiest and most culturally significant cities in the United States. Its economy is based on higher education, research, health care, finance, and technology, principally biotechnology.
The city was founded in 1630 by Puritan colonists from England. Probably the most famous event in its history is the one taken shortly before The American Revolution, known as Boston Tea Party. It was one of the events that initiated the Revolution for Independence.
The city itself covers the area of 232.1 square kilometers (89.6 square miles); about 46 % belongs to water. It lies at the centre of Greater Boston, area which includes bourdering cities and some suburban communities further from Boston. All the metropolitean area covers 11,684.7 square kilomertes (4,511.5 square miles). It is called Combined Statistical Area (CSA), consisting of Boston-Worcester-Manchester and it is the fifth largest metropolitan area in the United States.
The population of city proper is 596,600 inhabitants with the population density 4,457 inhabitants per square kilometre. As far as the population of the urban area is concerned it is more than 4,300,000 and in the metropolitean area more than 5,800,000 inhabitants. Citizens of Boston are called Bostonians.
The downtown area and its immediate surroundings consist mostly of low-rise brick or stone buildings, with many older buildings in the Federal style. Several of these buildings mix in with modern high-rises, notably in the Financial District, Government Center, Back Bay, and the South Boston waterfront. The South End Historic District still remains the nation's largest surviving contiguous Victorian-era neighborhood.
Boston is famous mostly for its colleges and universities. There are more than 100 of them. Some of them belong to the most famous universities in the world, with the inalienable leading role of Harvard University.
